Spring

The spring season is moving right along and in fact we are about two to three weeks ahead of schedule. We have finished with our pruning. The unusually warm winter and spring have forced the trees out of dormancy much sooner than they should have.

The winter has been easy on the deer too so we have a lot of infiltration and browsing on the buds and trees. In anticipation of losing the new growth on our small trees to deer browsing we have hung two bars of soap on each tree as a deterrent. Of course the orchard is fenced in and there is 7,000 volts running through the fence but the deer are persistent.

Unity College

Last week we had a visit from Sarah Cunningham's class "Interpretation of Natural & Cultural Heritage." They visited our buildings, saw the cider operation, we discussed the apple business, and they had a tour of the orchard. They were a very nice group of students and we hope they enjoyed their visit and learned something about apple farming. Later in the week another group of students from the same class came to visit.

Final Weekend

We still have pick your own on 5 varieties and we also have shopping bags of apples at $10 each in our farmstand. These are 30 lbs. (3/4 bushel) of good storage apples at a very good price. We also made a lot of cider in case you want to stock up. Cider can be frozen very well and we supply extra caps at no charge so you can drain a little down out of the jugs prior to freezing.

We still have a small assortment of new (sometimes antique) apples for you to try at reasonable prices. These apples are just coming into production and may be worth a look. We have Smokehouse, Fameuse, Cameo, very large Melrose, Valstar, and a few others.

Finally, Maine-ly Apples will be closing for the season on Monday, October 31.

This Weekend

Starting this weekend we will have both Northern Spy and Suncrisp in our farmstand. These are the last varieties of our fall selection. We still have plenty of pick your own especially in the Idareds, Spencer, Golden & Red Delicious, and Empire.

We also have bins of Idared, Spencer, and Empire at our farmstand that we are selling at $10 per shopping bag. These are picked apples, not drops. We do have bushels of drops we are selling for $4 each. You can go pick your own animal feed drops or buy a big 600 pound bin from us for $55.

We are only open until Halloween so now is the time to stock up for winter or put in your holiday orders for apples and cider. Though our store won't be open, we make cider every week and keep apples until Christmas. Cider freezes very well and if you get some for freezing we will supply extra caps at no charge.

The weather looks very good for apple picking this weekend so we look forward to seeing you.

Photos

Herb Crosby visited us this past weekend, and as he has done in the past he took some really beautiful photos of our orchard. We have posted a few of those photos to our website, including one of our pick your own Idareds. As you'll see we have lots of apples.

We have also had some questions about when we are closing. We're not sure right now, but we will be open through Halloween weekend at least.

Congratulations to Marcus of Thorndike for winning our annual drawing. Marcus won a gift basket full of apples, cider, and many other goodies from our farm store. Thanks to all those who entered and best of luck next year.

Also, we just opened two new long Cortland rows for pick your own. The apples in these rows are big and plentiful.

This Weekend at Maine-ly Apples

Starting Friday, September 24th we will be having pick your own on Macouns and Galas, both are very abundant this year. We will continue offering pick your own on McIntosh and Cortland as well. There are plenty of drops on the ground if you are looking to do some baking. They are available at the bargain price of $5.00 per half bushel. In our farm stand we also have Primas, Ginger Golds, and the most-anticipated: Honeycrisps.

We just received a new stock of our famous honey, various candle scents, and new to us this year, Stone Fox Farm pints of ice cream including pumpkin ginger and caramel apple crisp (made with our apples). We also have an assortment of gourds, decorative corn, pie pumpkins including Long Island Cheese, Baby Bears, and New Englands, loads of squash, and of course fresh-squeezed cider. We look forward to seeing you this weekend.

Programming Notes

Just a friendly reminder that we currently only accept cash and check as forms of payment. While we are exploring accepting credit/debit cards, we are hesitant to do so if it forces us to raise our prices.

We also now have a mobile website. This is a slimmed down version of our normal site that will load even faster on an iOS, Andriod, or other mobile device. The site can be found at http://www.mainelyapples.com/mobile or from the link at the bottom of the main page. If you have feedback about the mobile site, please let us know.
