If you are looking for an apple variety that is a good "keeper" then you should think about Idared. Idareds are a later season variety that are distinguished by their storability. We are not exaggerating when we say that if you keep Idareds in a cool, dark place, they will last all winter. Every season we have people remark to us what an excellent storage apple they are. Sometimes they even bring one from the previous season! Idareds are good for eating and are especially good for baking and cooking, and many people claim that their flavor actually improves in storage.
If you have spent some time exploring our site, you may have noticed that some of the photographs were taken by Herb Crosby (such as the picture of Idareds above). Mr. Crosby recently visited our orchard and was kind enough to share some of the photographs that he took. You can find a number of them on our photos page. While he was here we also snapped a picture of him. That's Herb Crosby on the left standing in front of an Idared tree.
"Explosively crisp" is how the Honeycrisp is described by its developers. While this may sound like marketing hype, a Honeycrisp is as tasty, crisp, and juicy as any apple that you will find. Their great taste and texture, along with their large size and excellent storability, have made Honeycrisps incredibly popular with consumers and apple producers alike. Just like our earlier season variety Zestar, Honeycrisp was developed by the University of Minnesota. Although they were introduced in 1991, already over 3 million Honeycrisp trees are producing fruit and more are being planted each year. Since the trees were designed to withstand cold Minnesota winters they do very well in Maine. Maine-ly Apples is proud to offer Honeycrisp; although they are all gone for this season, put them on your list for next year, we think you will really like them!
Sunday, September 9th was Maine Apple Sunday, a kick-off to what is shaping up to be a great 2007 apple season. By our estimation the entire weekend was a huge success. We had lots of people come visit us, and a number of you mentioned that you saw us on WABI-TV5 News during the week. As part of the celebration we gave away free samples of cider, donuts, and Zestars (more about them below) and we also started the sign-up for our holiday turkey drawing. We are going to continue taking names for the drawing through the end of October, so when you are at Maine-ly Apples this fall, make sure to put your name in. You can see a few more pictures from Maine Apple Sunday on our photos page.
As part of the Town of Dixmont's Bicentennial Celebration, Maine-ly Apples hosted an apple pie baking contest on Sunday, August 19th. The judges were Todd Simcox, weatherman for WABI TV 5, Casey Holmes of Maine-ly Apples, & Sally Luce, owner of Cranberry Falls in Troy. There were ten entries and the winners were:
1st place – June Henderson
2nd place – Marion Dunivan
3rd place – Sonia Erskine
